It is official: Erik has been appointed as Research Fellow at Vlerick Business School in Belgium
November 11 2020
It is with some pride that Strategic Analysis Services BV can announce that its founder has been appointed Research Fellow at Vlerick Business School in Belgium as of Nov. 2020. Vlerick is a triple-accredited business school: a status held only by the global top-1% of the business schools.
Vlerick and Erik already cooperate since 2017, when Erik delivered a guest lecture at Vlerick in a Vlerick in-house-company course. Since Vlerick’s Prof Dr Fred Lemke has involved Erik as guest lecturer in Vlerick’s flagship program: the online MBA.
At this moment, Vlerick and Erik work together on a high-impact publication. Given the now formal appointment, Erik can from now on also participate in Vlerick teams that consult to individual companies. Plans are in place to start working together for the first Vlerick customer shortly.

IFCN – Strategic Analysis Services training co-production in november 20 well appreciated
November 11 2020
Nov. 10 and 11, 2020 IFCN AG and Strategic Analysis Services BV have held their second open Market Intelligence capabilities development training. The training focuses on how to turn data into value for your organization, both by organizing market intelligence initiatives well as well as by building better capabilities in running individual market intelligence projects.
Where the first edition of this training in early March 2020 was held in a class-room setting in a hotel in Hamburg, Germany, this second edition was 100% online. The training capitalized on usefulness of the Breakout Room facility within online meeting tool Zoom. Using Breakout Rooms, mutually inspiring small group discussions between participants, discussing real-life market intelligence issues, were exchanged with plenary sharing sessions.
Nineteen participants from four continents (South America, Africa, North America, and Europe) and in total some dozen countries participated. As the training stretched over participants with eight hours difference in time zones, it was held from 2 – 6 PM CET to have an acceptable time spot for all.
The participants rated the training as follows:
– Overall satisfaction 50% Excellent, 50% good
– Split plenary/group work 73% Excellent, 27% good
Stimulating by these encouraging poll results, IFCN AG and Strategic Analysis Services BV will certainly consider organizing this training again in 2021.

IFCN Market intelligence training in Hamburg was a great success
March 10 & 11, 2020
March 10 and 11, IFCN organized a two-day market intelligence training for its customers in Hamburg, Germany. All was organized under the enthusiastic leadership of IFCN’s Muzaffar Yunusov. The timing was challenging. Some companies planning to send participants had already enforced a travel-ban. Fortunately, a significant number of participants did still attend. Strategic Analysis Services BV offered the training as sub-contractor of IFCN.
Participants have been trained in how to turn IFCN’s rich and permanently actualized dairy data into even more value in their companies. The first step to achieve this is by turning data into insights. For this it helps when the internal market intelligence analysis function in a company is built or where applicable and needed further professionalized. The second step is to professionalize how to run both individual market intelligence projects and how to run a portfolio of such projects in parallel.
The third and final step is to ensure that insights emerging from data and market intelligence work are being acted upon. A lot of attention was paid to strengthening the participants’ capabilities to ensure insights do improve the quality of decision-making in their companies.
Participants appreciated the training. Here are some comments:
“Excellent course – Directly applicable to current assignments. Erik brings a wealth of knowledge and experience”. Brent Crossman, Volac
“Inspiring” – Nydia Hernandez Diaz de Leon Madero Dairy Systems
For those that missed the training: the good news is, the next one is again scheduled in Hamburg, Oct. 13,14 – 2020. When you in your company would like to upgrade your market intelligence function to turn data into insights and ultimately into better decisions, please contact IFCN and book your seat at:

Just published: Concurreren op Kennis (Competing on Knowledge)
March 4, 2020
The book Concurreren op Kennis has been released for sales by Uitgeverij Business Contact in Amsterdam. This book discusses in Dutch why in today’s data-driven world, data management becomes the bedrock of business strategic and tactical decision-making.
The book covers what competing on knowledge means and how to change your organization into one that wins in the market through competing on knowledge.
Recommended reading for anyone that realizes that it is no co-incidence that seven of the world’s most valuable companies by market capitalization today either have been data-driven by design or have been among the earliest converters to a data-driven company architecture.
Structured Analytic Techniques for Intelligence Analysis now 3rd edition
Feb, 2020
Randy Pherson did it again! He prepared the third and new edition of the masterpiece “Structured Analytic Techniques for Intelligence Analysis”. This book should feature on the shelf of any analyst with a little bit self-respect. It is the golden standard in the field.
The first edition, released in 2010, has initially been prepared by Randy together with Richards J. Heuer Jr. The latter of course is best known for his work Psychology of Intelligence Analysis and for his developing of the Analysis of Competing Hypotheses methodology. Despite Dick Heuer’s passing away in 2018, Randy continues to update and expand the book, now increasing the number of analytic techniques covered in this new edition to sixty-six.
It makes me proud that Randy has invited me for a blurb on the back of this third edition. I wrote:
“In today’s world, truth is increasingly obscured by disinformation and fake news. In analysis it seems an uphill battle to retain objectivity and to continue working exclusively with the facts. Fortunately, Pherson’s seminal book has been updated, continuing to empower analysts and managers in the public and private sectors to cope with today’s analytical challenges.”
Instead, however, of bothering you with my blurb I should say: go and order your own copy now.

Clayton Christensen sadly passed away at age 67
24 Jan, 2020
January 23, 2020 was a sad day not only for the Christensen family but for all management science practitioners. One of the most influential thinkers in the management field, Clayton Christensen, passed away at the age of only 67. He had been severely ill before but had recovered. The cancer he had now contracted, however, became fatal.
Christensen, more than any other thinker, has influenced and shaped my understanding of business. His book “The innovator’s dilemma”, published in 1999, I consider the best management study I have ever read. He will forever be remembered for the concept of ‘disruptive innovation’ (see the article How to timely discover market disruption featured under Knowledge & Inspiration at this website). May he rest in peace.

See: www.iafie.org. The call for papers is open until March 15, 2020.
International strategy remains a fascinating topic to teach
Jan, 2020
In January 2020 it has been a privilege to have been part of a great team. Together with David Weng, Yves Marien, Brian Tjemkes and Giovanni Machia I delivered the course “International Strategy” in the B.Sc. program of the School of Business and Economics at the VU (Free University, Amsterdam).
Over 200 students participated in the course which highlighted such strategic concepts as Michael Porter’s five forces and four factors. We also made students apply business forecasting tools such as Scenario Planning and Wargaming. In addition, students themselves practiced joint venture contract negotiations, based on a real case.
In addition, we discussed cases in which internationalization of a company was severely hindered by cultural obstacles. We used the cases to introduce and have the students apply the descriptive model of cultural dynamics as introduced by Geert Hofstede.
Sadly, just two weeks after we had made another year of students benefit from his work, the master Hofstede himself passed away, but at the blessed age of 96.
Master thesis students coaching has started
Jan, 2020
In January 2020, three Master Thesis students at the VU (Free University) School of Business and Economics have started with their research projects. They explore rather different but exciting research questions such as:
- How to avoid dairy farming in an EU country to be gradually phased out by identifying learnings from another agricultural segment that by now has almost entirely been banned.
- What critical success factors for business success can be deduced from analysing multiple cases of capital expenditure projects in the FMCG-industry?
- When does M&A in the agri-food sector result in better market positions for the acquirer and when are acquisitions likely to deliver disappointing business results (and why)?
It is extraordinarily stimulating to see the students proceed with their research. Their projects last until June. When there is more news to share, an update will follow.
How is data like alcohol?
Dec. 12, 2019

NISA conference stresses relevance for companies to protect themselves against trade secret theft by insiders
Nov. 21, 2019
Strategic Analysis Services BV founder Erik Elgersma today attended the three-yearly conference of the Netherlands Intelligence Study Association. Speakers included Pulitzer Prize Winner James Risen. One of the take-home messages was that Governments and companies in times of recurring protectionism and political antagonism among trade blocks are well-advised to upgrade their counterintelligence capabilities. They need to look at cyber channels but especially beyond when combatting data and trade secret theft; both elements of trade wars. Risks posed by insiders are easier overlooked and possibly harder to identify and control than firewall attacks. Elgersma is proud to announce that in 2020 he will be contributing to a book on corporate counterintelligence by expert writer Udo Hohlfeld, a fellow faculty member of the Institute for Competitive Intelligence.

Kite Consulting Skyline seminar identifies need for dairy sector to unite in communicating sound science
Nov. 6-7, 2019
Kite Consulting Ltd has organized its Skyline seminar in Stretton (Cheshire, UK). At the seminar over 30 participants with various roles in the dairy sector in the UK united to listen to and discuss the various presentations given. The seminar was held under Chatham House rules, so Strategic Analysis Services BV founder Erik Elgersma cannot individually attribute the various insights generated during the seminar. A key conclusion at the seminar was that the dairy sector increasingly faces societal pressure which is not always based on the latest science but detrimental to consumer confidence in dairy. The sector needs and is planning to regain the initiative in communicating the goodness of dairy to feed the world – both nutritionally and fitting in a sustainable economy.

SAS BV will speak at the Dairy Industry Newsletter conference 2020
Feb, 2020
It fills me with pride to announce that Barry Wilson’s Dairy Industry Newsletter has accepted my proposal to give a plenary lecture at their upcoming conference May 14 – 15 in London. For details see: https://dairyindustrynewsletter.co.uk/
The topic that I will cover is my now virtually complete (awaiting the last data points to come in):
2014-2018 UK Dairy Processing Industry Performance Review
In this study I have analysed financial and other performance criteria for the book years 2014 – 2018 for over 20 UK-based dairy processors. Together these processors convert around 85% of the UK’s raw milk pool into a wide range of products. Given this broad coverage, it may well be said that conclusions I draw for these companies together stand for the ‘state of the UK Dairy Processing Industry’. This state is relevant as the parliamentary elections of Dec. 12, 2019 resulted in a UK Government that will get Brexit done. The separation has now been realized. The question, however, remains what terms and conditions will apply. Depending on these terms, the next question is where and how the UK dairy processors will strategically move next. SAS BV’s study describes the fitness of the traveller prior to the beginning of the UK dairy processors’ new journey.
